OCCUPY ENCAMPMENTS

They lasted longer than most people expected — including, it seemed, some Occupiers. Occupy encampments went up in Portland, Bangor, and Augusta (non-encamped Occupy movements sprung up in countless towns statewide), with Portland's lasting the longest, both despite and because of near-constant media coverage. But a judge's ruling that the encampment was expressive speech and merited First Amendment protection was tempered by his simultaneous determination that the camp was unsafe and should be dismantled. Occupy-related events continue, though, at the Meg Perry Center, the State House, and all around Maine.
