BEST SEPTUAGENARIAN SOUL FOOD

Slade's Bar & Grill

We have a hard time with any restaurant that boasts its authentic "soul food" when said restaurant also boasts upholstered banquettes, julienned vegetables, and wine pairings. When we hear "soul food," we want a dark, lively ambience, a chatty waitstaff that's quick to crack wise, and paper napkins. That's just what we get at Slade's. The lower Roxbury institution has a history that stretches back more than 70 years, rotisserie chicken on Tuesdays, and catfish nuggets, fried porkchops, and heaps of candied yams and collard greens every other night of the week.
