The Sugar Honey Iced Tea
Ana Mallozzi, Kate Jones, Laila Aukee, and Emily Shaw comprise the Sugar Honey Iced Tea, auteurs of “folk do-wop,” as they call it. They serve bittersweet harmonies with a touch of sass. The quartet’s summer ’11 debut EP, Hits the Fan, is worth looking up (and only $5 at sugarhoneyicedtea.bandcamp.com), Ukulele, cello, mandolin, and banjo conjure the old-time roots and bluegrass, but the ladies dish a modern-day lyrical spin on “Middle Man” and “Sister, Stay Away.” And the two-minute hoedown “Hula Hoop Girl from Tennessee” is nothing but pure fun. The Sugar Honey Iced Tea is a refreshing take on standard folk jams and a must-see at Local 121 and Roots Café. Look the ladies up at thesugarhoneyicedtea.com.
