Joe Beats, continues his decade-long pursuit of perfection behind the boards as a “sample-based producer and performer,” as stated on joeybeats.com. From contemporaries such as the Alchemist, RJD2, and DJ Shadow to classic mix-and-match crate diggers Sam Sever and Large Professor, Joe Beats specializes in creating a dope sonic template from the cutting room floor. He originally whet his whistle as half of BMP vets Non-Prophets, providing the dense rhythms and chopsocky cuts for iconic wordsmith Sage Francis.
Beats calls Newport home, but was informed of his BMP DJ victory while on tour in California with up-and-coming teammate Mr. Blak Lungz. So how is the reception for a Rhode Island beatminer trying to do his thing on the left coast?
“The main difference is the open-mindedness and overall appreciation level out here [in Cali],” Beats proclaimed. “For example, there is a larger female contingent at all shows in California, and they respect the craft too. It’s not just dudes who want to stand around and geek out about recording equipment.”
With an impressive resume (six albums) and a slew of live dates under his belt (a recent tour stretched from Ontario to Orlando), one would assume Joe Beats is one cool customer during game time. Not so, interestingly enough.
“I get very nervous before shows,” Beats admits. “In fact over time it’s gotten worse. I get this really messed up stomach thing where I’m on the verge of vomiting — no matter the size of the performance.”
Beats is touring heavily behind last year’s Diverse Recourse, “the psych-infused beat sequel to 2003’s Reverse Discourse,” as well as the debut Beats and Blak collabo Strategery, and has become a fan favorite on XM Radio’s Pitch Control Sessions.
