2012 Best Music Poll Winners

Jam Band

Dirigo have been on the scene for years (though only since 2010 under this moniker), but took the jam scene by storm with the release of their first album, Jamericana, in 2011. Their lineage is impressive: guitarist Luke Patchen Montgomery and bassist Erik Glockler hail from Vermont jam supergroup Strangefolk, drummer Russ Lawton also worked with Strangefolk as well as Phish’s Trey Anastasio, and guitarist Steve Jones is a Maine alt-country roots-rock man about town. But Dirigo are carving their own distinctive reputation among lovers of rock, roots, country, blues, folk, and (naturally) jam music — proving that what’s important is not the bands they are alumni of, but each member’s undeniable musical talent. Their songs are catchy and fresh while somehow capturing a comforting familiarity, with fiery guitar riffs and lilting vocals that lend a steady groove to the listener and could just as easily be imagined coming from headphones as from a festival stage. | RUNNERS-UP: Cyborg Trio, Dominic and the Lucid, Project
