Indie Act
Milkman’s Union
|
Though the Union only properly released two songs this past year (the delicate and country-minded Texas Hold Me seven-inch EP), they laid the groundwork for what will surely be an explosive next chapter. The band have become very visible since last summer, adding the talented songwriter Jeff Beam on bass, winning Deli Magazine’s New England Artist of the Year, and embarking on several touring expeditions in the Northeast and beyond. They’re currently putting the finishing touches on a full-length LP, their first since 2009’s proggy, post-rock Roads In. One of Maine’s truest examples of “college rock” (literally: the band formed at Bowdoin in 2007), the Milkman’s ethos goes refreshingly beyond the well-trod terrain of contemporary indie fare, balancing dynamic, carefully orchestrated pop songs set adrift by Peter McLaughlin’s jazz-tinged rhythms and frontman Henry Jamison’s wistful, cerebral confessions. | themilkmansunion.com RUNNERS-UP: Brenda, Hi Tiger, Foam Castles
