What’s Fucking Next
Stephie Coplan & the Pedestrians
|
Stephie Coplan just might be Boston’s last great radio success story. One night in late November, the former Tufts student emailed an MP3 of her latest single, “Jerk,” to WFNX program director Paul Driscoll from the comfort of her New Jersey apartment. On the fly, Driscoll edited out the swears and spun the track a few hours later on his Nightly News program. The song — about a douchebag former flame that, against the singer’s better judgment, maintains a place in her bed and her head — became a hit in Boston, sparking copycat radio play in cities across the country. Coplan self-released the Pedestrians’ homonymous EP in January, but you can expect her next record will have some major-label muscle behind it. Performing at the WFNX Seaport Six show at the Pavilion June 14, chances are that the piano-pounding future songwriter starlet will no longer have to personally email radio stations for attention.
