Wilco

The profile of Wilco was at its peak with the 2002 release of the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco, which detailed the ridiculous label politics and inner-band strife surrounding the making of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which left Warner Bros. with egg on its face and Wilco known as the little group that could. Since that time, the band have continued making absorbing LPs, including September’s The Whole Love, which could easily be considered a career-defining work, something that could be said for a few others in the catalog. What makes this one so special is the attention to detail, from the off-the-American-reservation rock of “Standing O” to the chilled-out sonics of “Black Moon.” Every instrument knows its place, never being too much or too little, and the result is about as perfect a roots album as could be.
