Afrocubism Best National World Music

What turned into Buena Vista Social Club (the biggest-selling world-music album ever) was originally intended as a singular Afro-Cuban fusion, until passport hassles deferred the Malian participants, leading producer Nick Gold to make other plans. Fourteen years later, Gold realized his initial dream, bringing together Buena Vista guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa (and his Grupo Patria), ngoni-lute player Bassekou Kouyate, Rail Band electric guitarist Djelimady Tounkara, kora master Toumani Diabaté, balafon player Lassana Diabaté, and griot singer Kassé Mady Diabaté. A slightly different version of the group sold out Berklee Performance Center in November and filled the hall with a lilting, driving music that, as Gold envisioned, moved away from its varied source material and went to a different, magical place all its own.
