Cut Copy

bmp_cutcopy

Ten years ago, finding dance music that everyone could agree on meant either listening to (shudder) Moby or getting really shitty at any given wedding. These days, people seem all too ready to break into dirty-dance moves, and they’re none too picky about what takes them to the brink. Defeating the efficient electro of MSTRKFT, the crystalline Norwegian disco of Röyksopp, and the textural odysseys of the Field is no small feat — but Cut Copy are no small force. With the release of In Ghost Colours (Modular) last year, they tapped into the tight-jeaned herky-jerk that passes for “dance rock” and gave it some actual dance-floor grit, courtesy of the DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy. The result is a shimmering blend of rock, house, electro, freestyle, and shoegaze. Not to mention a band confident enough to play whatever feels good, categories (like dance) be damned.
