Viva La Vida , Coldplay
Oh, Best Music Poll, sometimes you tickle me so. For all the critical crowing surrounding this year’s runners-up (Animal Collective have reinvented the knob! Dear Science has reimagined imagination! Green Day have re-Green-Day’d Green Day, and it’s green-giddly-great for some reason!), deep down, people just want some Coldplay. At some level, it’s like why we don’t all eat almond-butter-and-royal-jelly sandwiches. Coldplay are a familiar staple that keeps for a long time and tastes roughly the same from one jar to the next. At another level (one where I’m being less of a dick about Coldplay), it’s because Viva la Vida is their (God help me) best work yet. What this means to me, I’ll keep to myself, but it’s clear the coat of Noxon the band slathered onto their already fanciful sound paid off in shine — and for better or worse, much of what glitters is gold.
