Dua Boakye (Bad Rabbits)
Bad Rabbits are a ticking time bomb. A rabble-rousing touring machine with two unreleased albums just itching to be unleashed on the world, the genre-defying rock-and-soul hybrid act is the lone Boston band to snag two BMP categories.Their Best Live Act nod arrives on the strength of a full-scale party-starting assault on venues from Allston to Los Angeles, filling in the parking lots across the flyover states with an attention-getting throwdown at last summer’s Vans Warped Tour. As for this year’s Best Male Vocalist? The soulful Dua Boakye rang in 2012 on stage with Gym Class Heroes during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rocking Eve, supplying the choice vocal hook to chart-topping hit “Stereo Hearts” as thousands in the crowd and at home watching on TV sang along. But it’s more than just gigs, appearances, and the ever-present threat of a good time — Bad Rabbits have been primed for national breakout since the self-release of 2010 EP Stick Up Kids, and their alliance with the progressive tastemakers at Karmaloop means that this time next year Dua and his Rabbits should be repping our city all over the world. Bet on it.
