Girls, Guns & Glory

Steered by the classic Nashville voice of Ward Hayden, this quintet sound like they’re preparing to step in front of the cameras on The Porter Wagoner Show, not like a band that plays the Paradise on St. Patrick’s Day. Their name suggests punkabilly, but their arrangements are as pure as the vocals, with jangling guitars, country shuffles, and only the occasional lead guitar breaking the general decorum in their most raucous numbers. But Girls Guns & Glory do like the tempos up, and their sophomore self-released debut Pretty Little Wrecking Ball is more a soundtrack to a blue-collar hoedown than to a tear-in-your-beer night on a barstool. The solid band features lead guitarist Colin Toomey, bassist Bruce Beagley, and drummer John T. Graham, but percussionist Brendan Murphy is the secret weapon — he adds a flair of showmanship onstage by using congas, djembe, washboard, and a donkey jaw to beat out the rhythms.
