Sparkle Shit is too vicious to be twee-pop but too sweet to be frightening. The New Brunswick power trio collects all of the fuzz you would expect from a punk act, but switches it up — often opting for keyboards over guitars, and leading the way with an over-caffeinated, percussive vocal chant. Their wild charm has the ability to connect with those who catch their shows in basements and community centers, since Sparkle Shit is a DIY-er’s dream come true. Shits ‘n’ Giggles, the sole release from the Jersey band, shows guts and unpolished glamour, and doesn’t reach for impractical complexity. They have a true affinity for power chords, crafting perfectly punchy tunes with little finesse. Make no mistake, our country has plenty of rough-around-the-edges garage rock; Sparkle Shit just wants to make it a little more kick-ass. We take no issue with that.
