Word on the
street is that Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon has called Polica the best band he’s
ever heard. That kind of endorsement is bound to make headlines, and Polica
deserve them. The band is barely a year old, but their debut album,
Give Up the Ghost, is full of gorgeous R&B-influenced
electronic pop tracks reminiscent of Portishead and Phantogram. Polica were
started by frontwoman Channy Leaneagh and Ryan Olson, who met while
collaborating on R&B art-house creepwave outfit Gayngs. Leaneagh has
more than enough vocal chops of her own, but, like with Gayngs, she chooses to
auto-tune her voice to give the music an experimental edge and an otherworldly
quality that’s both emotionally gripping and completely untouchable. Throw in
two drummers and their live show is sure to cause an above-average level of
groove.
