Stephen Steinbrink + French Quarter
SONG TO DOWNLOAD: “To Be New Again”
WEBSITE: http://stephensteinbrink.com/
Having gigged since 2006, Stephen
Steinbrink wouldn’t normally be considered “new” enough for 50 Bands. But for a
song-caster of his caliber, we’ll indulge in some rule-bending. A portion of
his older material could be mistaken for Death Cab for Cutie revisiting their
glossless roots. He’s clearly found his own voice on the oven-fresh solo
release I Drew a Picture, an assemblage of offbeat
testimonials sprinkled with unobtrusive sonic experimentation. “These songs
live in the flawed infrastructure of Phoenix
and in the hope that it can someday adjust,” he explains on Bandcamp. Let’s
hope it adjusts before Arizona
can arrange to have Steinbrink deported. We hear they’re deporting frickin’
everybody they can over there.

Record Label You Should Know:
Catchphraze Records
Maybe it’s Arizona’s
draconian attitude toward immigration law that makes it the perfect setting for
Catchphraze, whose catalogue includes the agonized wallow-core of A Cloud
Forest and a planet-straddling, punk-as-fuck seven-inch split between Inner
Conflict out of Germany
and Malgobierno of Chile.
