WHY THEM? To make a short story shorter: three Bennington women — two heartbroken, two of whom dislike one another — start singing together in a shared house. They form a group and call themselves Mountain Man, possibly because they major in gender studies. A year later, they are playing Glastonbury, even though two of them are still in college. What gives? Drawing comparisons to the Fleet Foxes, Gillian Welch, and Joanna Newsom, Mountain Man sing sweetly about (yes) mountains, trees, and rivers in folk arrangements distilled to their most haunting essence, with spare fingerpicking and harmonies so fey they are almost ominous. BONUS BIT! Mountain Man recorded their self-released debut, Made the Harbor, in what was once an ice-cream factory.
