WHY THEM? Laura Burhenn, who basically is the Mynabirds, may not be the first singer-songwriter to do the soul-meets-Americana thing, but she certainly does a damn fine job of it. And unlike many of her more buttoned-up contemporaries, Burhenn's new album What We Losein theFire We Gain in the Flood actually has some teeth to it.

BONUS BIT! The Mynah Birds were a Motown band who once counted among their membership one Neil Young. Burhenn chose the name to pay tribute to both sources of inspiration.
